A one-hour documentary in which the iconic photographer and writer, film director and composer Gordon Parks looks back at the America he has crossed and re-crossed on countless assignments, especially for LIFE magazine, to capture its hopes and dreams, its strengths and weaknesses and the spirit of its people. Rather than an autobiographical portrait, it becomes a pondering on the moments, the images of people great and small, which his camera and pen has recorded, and which are reflected in the acclaimed feature films he has written and directed. These moments combine in Parks’ recollection into a unique sense of the direction of our past and, perhaps, the course of our future.
