It is 1880 in the U.S. Territory of New Mexico. CHINO Valdez owns a horse ranch in this vast country, his lonely life being interrupted by a 15 year old runaway, Jamie Wagner, who seeks food and shelter and stays on. CHINO faces innumerable fights and hardships of the West, only to land in jail on Christmas Eve, with Jamie alone, tending the ranch. Upon his release from prison, he plans to marry Louise, his investment partner’s younger sister, only to be attached by her brother opposed to his marriage. When he tries to drive CHINO off his ranch, CHINO sends Jamie away, stampedes his horses into the wilderness, sets his own ranch afire, shoots his way out of an ambush, and leaves for a new life in a new land.
